Intentional non-Intentionality                                       ../drawings

I draw, I dream. It's a simple act - especially once the fear and preconceptsions are conquered. When that moment happens, the doodle or diagram becomes something strangely beautiful; the recording of one's observation or experience becomes something more than representation but a visual recording of a momentary conversation.

Drawing is quite meditative for me. It always puts me in the moment of now. When drawing a European plaza, an architectural detail from the past or having fun on a self-portrait, I feel my feet (or rear-end) firmly grounded. I begin to hear the local conversations, the neighborhood smells, see more grey hairs and am more aware than ever of the passing of "light-time". However, when I draw without a subject in front of me the lines, shapes, forms, strokes and tones that emerge on the surface end up as messages bubbling up from a deeper source from within. My mind becomes extremely quiet in those moments. Although I'm keenly aware of time when drawing from life, when I draw meditatively - or meanderingly - I get quite lost to time. It does not always happen but I always yearn to find that precious "disconnection". In those moments, I find that the editor in me becomes quite still. The resulting drawings are patterns, doodles, and diagrams. In some instances, they seem to reveal something archetypically personal.

As an artist, I need to engage in both types of drawing. Each method in its own way advances my technique and insight and feeds my painting and photography. It's all connected!  But if you ask, "which drawing do you prefer?", without hesitation I'd say, "the doodle of course".

Now, drawing with digitial tools is an entirely new animal...want to go on a safari?
