As fall transitions to winter, a somber mood settles into place that befits a season of rest and expectancy. Long gone are the lush colors of spring and summer as well as the rich golds, rusts, and oranges of fall. The seasons of birth, growth, and decline celebrate color more memorably than any other visual quality but winter, colored in more quiet hues, presents its glory in other ways. In contrast to the colorful display throughout the rest of the year, winter offers up a display of design in its most pure: the striking contrasts that occur between positive and negative forces.
During this time of year, harsh light from a low sun creates intense contrasts between figure and shadow. Consider the recurring form of winter: the naked limbs of a tree extend across space to capture an area of sky in a frame of branches; a shadow from a tree creates fantastical shapes outlined in black upon the snow; and the cracking of ice on a frozen pond becomes a study in point-counterpoint as the element of time slowly marches on. A visual narrative unfolds across the winter landscape, depicting compositions of contrast, tension, and balance.
